Vyommitra to launch into space in the third quarter of 2024: Singh

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is planning to launch the humanoid robot Vyommitra into space in the third quarter of 2024, according to Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh and other announcements. This Vyommitra mission is carried out by ISRO as a component of the Gaganyaan program’s testing of autonomous flight. It has been revealed by the Ministry of Science and Technology that the first crewed mission of the Gaganyaan program is scheduled to activate in 2025.

The fact that the mission is expected to take place in 2024, Vyommitra’s launch could take place in the third quarter, more precisely from July to September.

What does Vyommitra mean? What is the mission of the robot in space?

The name Vyommitra comes from the Sanskrit words “Vyoma,” a word that signifies “space,” and “Mitra,” meaning “friend.”

Vyommitra, a female robot, displays humanoid characteristics. She can send alerts, keep an eye on module settings, and run life support operations. Singh continued on the capabilities of Vyommitra, which includes the ability to respond to inquiries and operate multiple panels. Even, it can simulate human functions in a space environment and communicate with life support systems. 

Status of the Gaganyaan program

On October 21, 2023, ISRO started the first test flight mission for the Gaganyaan program without any people on board. The experiment, named TV-DNUM0 mission, held significant importance. It effectively showcased the operational capabilities of the Crew Escape System during the Test Vehicle Development Flight.

The Crew Escape System was aborted in flight, which means it was jettisoned while the Crew Module was still in the air. This allowed ISRO to test specific flight characteristics of the Crew Module. It enabled determination of how efficiently the Crew Escape System could be removed from the Crew Module to save astronauts’ lives in case of a mishap. The Crew Module went down in the Bay of Bengal and was successfully recovered.

The Gaganyan objectives

The Gaganyaan program aims to demonstrate India’s capability to send humans to low-Earth orbit. To accomplish this, the program plans to conduct a crewed mission using a human-rated Launch Vehicle Mark III (LVM3).

Uncrewed Gaganyaan missions have the goal of conducting technological demonstrations and checks for reliability and security. Before the first crewed spaceflight, it is necessary to conduct research on spacecraft systems.

India will be the fourth country to send human beings to space. This will occur if the first crewed mission of Gaganyaan is successful. Preceding India will be the Soviet Union, the United States, and China.
