Not everyone should enter an art competition. You wouldn’t call Picasso an award-winning artist, would you, Hockney once remarked? Art prizes neither create nor validate talented artists. All they do is state that a number of judges approve of the piece, and if the art gods are smiling, they may even hand over a bag of cash as proof.

Enter these UK art competitions if you can manage the entry fees and keep your composure in the event that your work is rejected. If it is chosen, a thrilling exhibition is in store, and you can practise the winner’s shocked acceptance speech. Crossing fingers. By the date of the submission deadline, contests are listed in reverse chronological order.
